This work is officially designated as an important cultural property  (重要文化財) in Japan, and is an excellent example of one of the great sixteenth-century masters of the art. Little is known of Sesson's personal life, other than the fact that he was a student of Sesshu, on at least two occasions he provided instruction in the art to the daimyō of Aizu. His works often depict rugged portrayals of nature which tend to incorporate dramatic movement.
