This work is officially designated as an important cultural property (重要文化財) in Japan, and is a prime example of the nanga sub-genre of sumie or suibokuga. Buson, most famous as a master haiku poet, was also a pioneer of nanga painting, whose representative artists shared an affinity for Chinese culture, and pattered their works off of Chinese literati paintings.
