This work is officially designated as an national treasure in Japan. Sesshū Tōyō was considered one of the most influential and representative painters in Japan, though few copies of his original works remain. This image is one of the few authenticated works, originally one part in a series of four hanging scrolls depicting the four seasons, only copies of the autumn and winter images remain in existence.
